The Pilot Episode 001

What is it all about ?

“There’s not enough of them.” Said my mate Guney.
Guney is a football and rugby television producer. He consumes podcasts insatiably, he’s part of the growing generation that can’t get enough of this expanding medium. He listens to all the normal shows, that he thinks basically sound the same and he wants more variety in generic Football Podcasts. He’s a Tottenham fan but doesn’t want a Tottenham podcast. He’s just interested in football, the game, how it works, how it’s covered.
It got me thinking.
After talking to Jamie, talkSPORT’s Social Media Guru, I started thinking some more. It does happen occasionally.
“What people love Sam is the feeling you’re taking them “behind the scenes”, those snippets do well for us.”
At this point my head was swimming. I love podcasts, and I’ve always wanted to make one. I spoke to Michelle, then to Alex and within 5 minutes were planning. Then things got technical and we all got more excited.
What about a football podcast that reflects on the football but in different way?
What about a podcast that takes the football fans into the commentary box, let’s tell them the story of our weekends, the pies we ate (the many pies in Crook’s case), the prep we did and didn’t use, the people we bumped into, the stories we didn’t tell, the best statistic we couldn’t cram in, the feeling in the mixed zone or tunnel afterwards.
Let’s look back at ourselves and review our own performances, what we’re happy about and not so happy about and talk about seeing Match of the Day and it not reflecting the game.
What about getting our grand colleagues involved? Quite a few of them are geeks.
Lets give them information that other podcasts don’t. Let’s take people behind the scenes and into that World. After all we go to over 350 games a season between us.
It may be rubbish. It may be just for geeks like us. But maybe, just maybe, you are one of us.
So we will poke fun at ourselves and revel in stats, talk about our weird meticulous habits and just enjoy the ride because after all….
All Football Commentators are Geeks
