Interview: Jon Champion

By Alex Crook

It is a commentary career that has enthralled the nation for the past two decades but how did Jon Champion get his big broadcasting break?

We will give you a clue, it involves four pints of beer and a particularly productive afternoon on a cricket crease.

Jon joined Sam, Alex and Michelle to share his origin story plus and tells us what it was like calling Michael Owen’s famous World Cup goal against Argentina and how he wished he’d said something different.

Plus, why a BBC big-wig listening in his bathtub as Manchester United great Eric Cantona kung-fu kicked a Crystal Palace fan landed Jon a role as John Motson’s stand-in on Match of the Day.

Jon also regales us with tales of working with party-loving Ally McCoist in the Russia and why he was accosted by computer game lovers at 4am in a hotel in South Africa.

That’s all on the second edition of All Football Commentators Are Geeks @afcgeeks

Listen to a new podcast that explores the commentary box. Starring @MichelleOwen7 @alex_crook @sammatterface. Special guest BT/ITV/ESPN/PLP commentator @JonChampionJC
