Marko Arnautovic punished Northern Ireland for missing key chances as Austria condemned Michael O’Neill’s side to their second defeat in the Nations League.
The West Ham forward scored midway through the second half after Steven Davis and Paddy McNair has spurned opportunities for the visitors.
A truly forgettable first half, briefly sparked into life in the second. Arnautovic clashed with Jonny Evans and Will Grigg almost equalised with a spectacular glancing header that crashed into the foot of the post.
By then the damage had been done. Austria’s captain slipped in behind Paddy McNair, having been played on by Jamal Lewis and he expertly steered passed Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
