Willian brought to an end a run of two home Premier League games without a win for Chelsea, and sent them six points clear of Arsenal in 5th.
Champions League chasing Chelsea ambled through the first half, with David Luiz setting up Pedro to score early thus allowing them to coast.
It nearly cost them.
Ciaran Clark scored with a bullet header after Newcastle had flicked into life before the break and Mauricio Sarri needed Willian to magic up a rocket to win it.
At times they looked enslaved to Sarriball, where possession is prized and tempo is sacrificed. Eden Hazard looked frustrated but still assisted the winner, and Chelsea had just about enough.
