Rayo Vallecano boosted their survival hopes with a first La Liga win against Real Madrid since 1997, ending a run of 14 straight defeats against Los Blancos.
Vallecano deservedly led midway through the first-half, when spotted Jesús Vallejo pulling on the shirt of Javi Guerra.
Adrián Embarba scored the penalty.
Real had more yellow cards, five, than shots on target, three.
Vallecano are six points from safety, with three games left, all against bottom-six teams.
Real Madrid have now lost 10 La Liga games, suffering 16 defeats across all competitions.
